“A Tourist’s Perspective” – Written by Emma, a traveler from London
At Tripskeeper, we love receiving travel stories from our customers. Recently, Emma, a traveler from London, shared her incredible experience of street photography in Istanbul. Instead of taking ordinary tourist photos, she decided to explore the city through the lens of a professional street photographer. Here’s her story, in her own words!
My Journey Through Istanbul: A Day with a Professional Street Photographer
*”Before visiting Istanbul for the first time, I was always fascinated by the vibrant streets and the stories hidden in every corner. But I knew that street photography wasn’t just about taking a good picture—it was about living the moment and capturing its essence.
That’s why I decided to book a professional street photographer from Tripskeeper to truly experience the city. My goal wasn’t just to take beautiful pictures but to create a collection of memories that felt alive.
Over the course of one day, we explored four incredible locations: Balat, Karaköy, Istiklal Street, and the Galata Tower area. And now, I want to share this unforgettable experience with you!”*
1. Balat – A Canvas of Color and Everyday Life
*”The first place my photographer suggested was Balat—a neighborhood that looks like it was pulled straight out of a colorful postcard. Narrow cobblestone alleys, vibrant houses, laundry hanging from balconies, and locals going about their daily routines.
As we walked through one of the backstreets, we saw an elderly tea vendor enjoying his afternoon break. My photographer whispered: “These are the moments you can’t plan—you just have to wait for them.”
A few minutes later, I found myself standing in front of one of Balat’s famous colorful houses. Instead of asking me to pose, my photographer said: “Interact with your surroundings, forget the camera.”
The result? One of the most natural and beautiful photos I’ve ever had!”*
2. Karaköy – Where Street Art Meets Modern Life
“After Balat, we headed to Karaköy, a completely different atmosphere. Graffiti-covered walls, cozy cafés with wooden tables, and a mix of hurried locals and relaxed artists.
Here, I could feel how Istanbul was both modern and traditional at the same time. My photographer told me: “Don’t stand still—just walk, enjoy the moment, and let the city guide you.”
At one point, we found a stunning mural, and I simply walked past it as my photographer captured the shot. The outcome? A photo that felt like a scene from an indie film.
Karaköy taught me that sometimes, the best pictures are the ones that happen naturally.”
3. Istiklal Street – The Beating Heart of Istanbul
*”When we reached Istiklal Street, my photographer smiled and said: “This place is a live performance.” And he was right! Street musicians, people shopping, the constant movement—everything felt alive.
One of my favorite shots was taken as the famous red tram passed behind me. It was a perfect blend of movement, energy, and history.
At the end of our session in Istiklal, we stopped by an old bookstore. The golden afternoon light spilled into the shop, and my photographer said: “This is golden hour—now is the moment!” That photo captured the exact feeling of Istanbul: warm, nostalgic, and magical.”*
4. Around Galata Tower – A Dreamlike View of the City
*”Our last stop was the Galata Tower area. Standing at the top, the city stretched out beneath me like a painting.
In the small streets below, we found an old man reading a newspaper outside a café. My photographer said: “This is a timeless moment—let’s capture it.”
But the best shot? It was taken just as I stood, looking up at the Galata Tower, with the wind gently playing with my hair. That photo, for me, captured the real spirit of Istanbul—something between a dream and reality.”*
Conclusion: Why This Experience Was So Special for Me
*”This wasn’t just a typical photoshoot—it was an experience. I wasn’t just a tourist posing for pictures; I was living the city, and my photographer was there to capture those moments for me.
Now, every time I look at these photos, I feel like I’m walking through the cobbled streets of Balat again, sipping coffee in Karaköy, blending into the energy of Istiklal, and standing in awe beneath the Galata Tower.”*
